--Mature learners will engage in scholarly activities and explore diverse topics--

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (May 15, 2006) – Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies’ Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) today announced its lineup for the upcoming Sizzling Summer Lecture Series with courses designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and challenge the minds of mature learners. Beginning in mid-June in both Escondido and Oceanside, the series consists of three lectures in the Turrentine Room at the Escondido Public Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library, and three lectures in the Zalvidea Room at Mission San Luis Rey.

All six lectures are set from 2 to 4 p.m. and are free to any member of the public age 50 and older. Although there is no charge to attend, seating is limited and reservations are recommended by calling (750) 750-4020.

Lectures at the Escondido Public Library, 239 Kalmia St., Escondido, will be held on Tuesdays, June 13, July 18, and August 15, 2006. Lectures at Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside, will be held on Thursdays, June 15, July 20 and August 17, 2006.

The Escondido series kicks off June 13 with Publisher Dick High of the North County Times speaking about The Trajectory of Truth:  Does the Media Deliberately Distort the News? followed on July 18 with U.S. Foreign Service Officer (retired) Hank Zivetz speaking on Vietnam Revisited:  Could We Have Won the War…and What if We Had?  The final Escondido lecture scheduled for August 15 will be facilitated by Rick Burruss, an astronomer at Palomar Observatory speaking on The Five Greatest Astronomical Discoveries of All Times and The 5 Greatest Astronomical Questions Today.

The Oceanside series begins June 15 with Dick High reprising The Trajectory of Truth: Does the Media Deliberately Distort the News? On July 20, David Lewis, director of the San Luis Rey Chorale and a music instructor for Mira Costa College, will speak about Making Overtures: A Festive Look at Music through the Ages.  Finally, August 17 features Cal State San Marcos Associate Professor Glen Brodowsky, Ph.D., will present A Sojourn in China about his recent experiences leading a travel study tour on the Yangtze River.

According to Suzanne Strassburger, director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, “OLLI is devoted to the joy of learning for older adults.  Our summer series is structured to give a free taste of what participants may expect from our traditional Fall, Winter and Spring Terms.”

About the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The OLLI program at Cal State San Marcos is funded through a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation.  The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides mature learners – ages 50 and older – with an intellectually stimulating program of non-credit courses taught by Cal State San Marcos and other active or retired professors and other content experts. Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies is one of only 73 universities in the U.S. funded with a three-year Osher grant. The program recognizes that an active mind fosters a general sense of well-being and challenges learners to stay intellectually alive and socially aware.  For more information, visit www.csusm-es.org/olli
