The best managers know how to fit all the complex pieces of a newspaper together so that it is both a profitable enterprise and a vital part of the community.
These managers have the vision, self-confidence and knowledge that come from advanced training, hard work and the support of their employers. They know how to motivate, negotiate and communicate in a multicultural, multimedia workplace.

"I have watched five colleagues at The Seattle Times go through MTC and it has literally transformed them. For many, attending MTC is like finding themselves on top of a mountain for the first time, able to see things about the newspaper business, about their jobs, their careers and themselves they've never seen before. They are exposed to industry experts, new ideas and new people in a setting that is both nurturing and incredibly
challenging."
Alex MacLeod
Managing Editor President and Publisher
The Seattle Times
"The combination of serious classroom work and experience at another
newspaper is perfect for learning.

The Maynard Institute has produced such managers for nearly 15 years through its Management Training Center at Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
For five weeks each summer, Management Training Center fellows from the editorial and business departments learn what it takes to make the whole newspaper work in a diverse marketplace.
The rigorous program immerses participants in financial management and budgeting, organization behavior, media convergence, human resources, advertising, marketing, business operations and editorial processes. Case studies help participants examine timely industry issues.
In a high point of the program, participants spend four days working in teams at newspaper field sites around the country. Each group produces a report on its research.
The curriculum is developed and taught by faculty from the Northwestern's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and Medill School of Journalism as well as by leading management consultants and newspaper executives.
MTC builds more than management and leadership skills. It equips graduates with an asset they are unlikely to find anywhere else: a network of Maynard Institute colleagues who embody the values of diversity and who are determined to change the face of American journalism.
