Information About the Alameda County Wheelchair and Scooter Breakdown Transportation Service
Alameda County’s Wheelchair and Scooter Breakdown Transportation Program provides transportation services to people in Alameda County who use wheelchairs or scooters.

The intent of this service is to provide transportation in any situation that potentially leaves a wheelchair or scooter user without the means to reach their final destination.

This service is for motorized or manual wheelchairs and scooters that do not exceed 30 inches in width and 48 inches in length measured two inches above the ground, or more than 600 pounds when occupied.

This service is free.
Service Examples Qualified uses of the service include the following:

1. Transport of a wheelchair or scooter and its owner to a wheelchair/scooter repair shop or other location due to mechanical breakdown of the wheelchair or scooter which occurred inside or outside the home.

2. Transport of a wheelchair or scooter to a hospital where the user was transported for an emergency and taken to the hospital without their wheelchair or scooter.

Accessing the Service This service is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. There are two ways to access this service.

1. In the case of a mechanical breakdown either in the home or outside the home:
Call toll free 1-877-50-WHEEL (1-877-509-4335) and request emergency wheelchair/scooter service assistance. Give the dispatcher your exact location. An assessment will be conducted by phone to determine your exact location. The emergency wheelchair and scooter service provider response time is on a “best effort basis” and can be between 30 minutes to one hour.

2. For emergencies:
Call 911.
Police, Fire or a 911 dispatcher will arrange for the transport of you and your wheelchair or scooter. This includes the transport of your wheelchair or scooter in the event that you are taken to a hospital without your wheelchair/scooter.
