• Suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in Ohio. Every year, more than 1200 Ohioans die by suicide. |

• From 1980 to 1999, there were 205 deaths by suicide in Muskingum County (10 per year). |
|
• For every suicide death, it is estimated that six individuals will be profoundly affected for the rest of their lives. |
|
• Suicide ranks as the third leading cause of death for young people (ages 15-24). Only accidents and homicides occur more frequently. |
|
• Elderly adults have rates of suicide close to 50% higher than that of the nation as a whole. |
|
• There is a relationship between depression and suicide—the risk of suicide is increased to more than 50% in depressed individuals. |
|
• Suicide is preventable. Most suicidal people desperately want to live—they are just unable to see alternatives to their problems.

• Four times more men than women die by suicide, but three times more women than men attempt suicide. |
