Spotlight Shines on Cross-Media Journalists
| |
After two decades as a radio journalist, Wendell Harper of KPFA in Berkeley, Calif., felt it was time to learn some new media skills. Jeffrey Harjo, media coordinator of Oklahoma's Absentee Shawntee News newspaper, wanted to learn how to move his print content onto the Web. Announcing The Charles Jackson Fellowship
Charles Jackson's 35-year career spanned the whole of print journalism, from The Dallas Weekly to The Washington Post, including award-winning coverage at the Oakland Tribune. As the director of programs for the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, he oversaw the transition of bringing training programs into the digital age. Jackson was an influential African American journalist, a sharp editor and gentle mentor who pushed newspapers nationwide to embrace people of all colors and cultures. He died March 7th in San Francisco at the age of 55. In his memory, The Charles Jackson Fellowship will be awarded annually on a competitive basis to enable a working journalist to attend a Maynard Institute editing, cross-media or management training program.
